A cool corner of Cilento

Among the many natural beauties of Cilento, the Venus' Hair Falls in Casaletto Spartano are one of the area's major attractions, visited by many from all over Italy. These waterfalls are formed by the Bussento river's tributary, the Bussentino, which enriches the waters of the Bussento river near Morigerati, reaching a temperature of between 6 and 8 degrees.

The name given to the waterfalls comes from an elegant fern with an ethereal appearance and a characteristic deep green colour: the Maidenhair fern. They are located within the Capello Area Oasis, rich in nature trails for trekking lovers, bridges and structures. Among the latter there is an old watermill restored to its former glory that can be visited. There are also wooden bridges in the oasis, these built to reach the waterfall. In addition to the wooden ones, there is also a Norman stone bridge over the waterfall.

The 37 km long Bussento river springs from the Varco La Peta spring on Mount Cervati at 900 metres above sea level in the municipality of Sanza. During its course, the river feeds the artificial dam of Lake Sabetta and disappears underground at Caselle in Pittari. The Bussento river, before flowing out near Policastro Bussentino, re-emerges to the surface at Morigerati, where it gave birth to the Bussento Caves, now a WWF oasis.

  • Legend has it that one day the goddess Venus, in order to refresh herself from the heat and find some peace, came to this wonderful oasis; she loved the place so much that she made it her own little corner of secret paradise. One day a shepherd with his flock happened to pass by. The man heard, not far from his path, the persuasive voice of a maiden who sang and danced on a beautiful lawn of white daisies. He approached and could do nothing but admire her and silently contemplate her beauty; he fell madly in love with her. He loved everything about her, her voice, her eyes, but above all her long, soft, golden hair. He longed for that hair more than anything else in the world and one night, while Venus slept, he reached up and cut off a lock of it. The goddess woke up suddenly and, angry at that vile gesture, turned the lock of hair into water, which immediately slipped from the man's hands, increasing in intensity and volume so much that it drowned him within a short time.
  • The Rio Casaletto, or Bussentino, a tributary of the Bussento, has cut through the cretaceous limestone rocks, forming a spectacular gorge, called Forra di Casaletto, which is a geomorphological geological site. The landscape that the river offers, with numerous natural waterfalls, is highly suggestive.
  • The oasis is of considerable geological and hydrogeological interest and has been listed as a Priority Habitat in annex I of the EU Habitats Directive.
